Robert Julius Beyschlag

 

I have a very curious oil painting, possibly by Beyschlag.  It has stumped people whether it is an original of the "Woodland Vows" painting, or a very clever chromolithograph.  It is masterfully done.

 

It has paint strokes that exactly match up with the strokes on the canvas textured paper that has been applied to canvas that has been attached to cardboard.  The paint texture is very shallow. The signature appears painted as the rest, and there are tiny gaps in the strokes of the name that correspond to the pockets of texture on the surface.  There are signs of age appropriate with the era.  This scene was painted around the 1870's.
