Description:

This webpage is devoted to an extremely economic way to make pulsed green holograms. It uses the cheap and surplus SSY-1 laser head, PFN1 (pulse forming network) circuit, and Trigger board circuit that are matched to the SSY1. It is capable of producing holograms of a 3” x 3” subject

Laser overview:

The SSY-1 is an Nd:YAG pulsed laser with internal dye q-switch formerly used as a rangefinder in the M1 Abrams tank. To make it work for holography, it receives an internal user-installed Brewster window to polarize the 1064nm 5mm beam. The SSY-1 has a passive q-switch dye cell that puts out a 150mJ 4ns pulse from the 15 Joule input from the matched PFN1. It is triggered by a footswitch closure to the trigger board. It requires a 900 VDC power supply with at least 10mA. Maximum flash rate is 4 Hz to allow for air cooling. It is frequency doubled with a KTP or DKDP or KD*P crystal to 15 mJoule 532nm green output. The 1064nm is filtered out with an IR mirror. The green beam is expanded by a plano convex or concave lens with 15mm focal length. MUST have goggles for 1064nm and 532nm beams and reflections. NEVER beam the green directly into your eyes at any time. Eyes closed or with goggles works fine. Not responsible for injuries from careless use.

Hologram overview:

For transmission holography, Integraf / Slavich VPR-M green 532nm sensitive film has been used. Cutting a 4 x 5” film in quarters brings the cost down to under a dollar each. The right half of the green beam is used to cover the film which is angled at 30-45 degrees from the reference beam. The other half is used to illuminate the object. Development in Metol developer solution and bleach / conventional fixer. A hologram can be taken, developed and dried in under 3 minutes! There is absolutely NO vibration table needed. You can hold the film in your fingers without a mount since the green pulses are so rapid. A red safelight by gel or red Led array can be used.
